So the Gold Coast Supanova Pop Culture convention has been and gone, and to the delight of a super
Harley Quinn fan like myself - I got to meet Rachel and Terry Dodson, the husband and wife inker/artist team from the official Harley Quinn run!
I also got my Harley Quinn issues #1 and #2 signed by both of them - I wanted to bring all the issues I had but then I thought that it could be pushing our tentative friendship, and also several labour violations. So I kindly settled for those two issues, and also a X-men issue where Emma Frost physically dances around Cyclops' brain in a flapper costume while every woman in his life populates the building that resides there. I like the kooky ones.
Very happy with how down to earth and happy to talk to random fandom strangers - Terry said he was impressed that even now he sees such devoted fans of a series that is fairly old by comic standards.
The official Harley Quinn run began in 2000 and lasted for about four years. It showed her coming into her own as she was apart from the Joker and finding her feet as a crime lord. The beauty of this series is that it didn't change Harley into something she wasn't.
Although she was separated from the Joker and outwardly claimed she was over him, secretly she pined over him and had wistful feelings over the 'good old days' but she wasn't stupid enough to think it was all sunshine and daisies. She grew throughout the series, just like a real relationship - current or not - has its ups and downs.
We got to see her friendships with other villains like Poison Ivy and unsuspecting chumps like Jimmy Olsen, her terrific start running the Joker's gang and subsequent gang mishaps - she can do the crime but her hearts not in it - she'd rather have fun or play match maker.
So no, it wasn't your usual villain run but it was entertaining nonetheless, with the art emphasizing the story a lot. It's really good to see a character who is both normal sized and has facial expessions going around doing their thing.
