Harley Quinn: Premium Format Figure - Sideshow Collectibles

Sideshow Collectibles has been hard at work making some nice things that I can't afford right now, (and also spelling collectables in a way that offends both my British sensibilities and my spellchecker, but that's another matter entirely) so I thought I'd spend a little time talking about one of their new statues.

One thing I really appreciate with Sideshow is that they seem to understand the appeal of the classic Harley Quinn along with her various reiterations. They're also good at interpreting Classic Harley Quinn for people who want something 'new' without going as far as say, the Suicide Squad movie version of her outfit which is basically two-toned apples and oranges and a far cry from what she started out in.

That and their items are really high quality - hence the 'premium format figure' name being trademarked by Sideshow. They go above and beyond to make sure what they sell is great and packed with fun props/features and detailed bases. So, let's get into it.

Starting with the interchangeable faces - here we have two options. One has a skinny domino mask which showcases her eye make-up, which is sort of thickly winged out and has more traditional clown 'tears' make-up. Her eyes are ringed by light red colouring - which I think is meant to be a nod to her current style - one eye blue one eye pink/red - as opposed to the usual clown face paint.

This head has white greasepaint with a very very underhanded and pleasing blush effect. Her lips are a dark red with a bit of a black tinge - which combined with her displeased expression makes Harley look like a much more dramatic character. I like her loose pigtails - the colour is nice, I'd almost forgotten what she looked like without the dip dye! - and the highlights weaved through the natural looking strands looks realistic.

On the other hand - the other Harley head has a much wider domino mask - almost as wide as her cheerful yet vaguely garish grin. Her lipstick is just dark red, and looks a lot like Joker's smile, with the edges of her lips exaggerated and almost brought out into a Chelsea Smile. Her face has the same greasepaint and blush tones as the other head, but is encased in her classic jester hat. Her eyes have more of a smoky look to them - light greys gradually getting darker. Her eyeliner is still winged out and heavy towards the end.

The outfit is beautiful - half, shiny/wet look red vinyl and matte black leather for the rest. I like that you can see the stitching on certain parts - it makes it look like Harley's gone out herself and made this outfit. She bares her shoulders, wearing opera length gloves that end in her classic ruffle cuffs.

The stark contrast between her white face and her tan by comparison skin is a nice touch. Her collar looks fluffy and appears to be real fabric as you can see it lifting up in the image. Like her classic costume, Harley has two colours on the top of the outfit then they change sides on the bottom.

Here, she also has a little.. what would you call it? Hem, border? Something anyway - around the shoulders and also on the top of the gloves. The head that has her pigtails has alternating hair bands also.

The gloves are two toned as well - one colour down past the elbow, changing at the wrist - but while the predominant colour is there, the underside/ring and pinkie fingers are in the original colour. As you can see in the image above, Harley has a black glove with red diamonds, the part over her hand is red, but also contains some black just less than halfway over her palm. This is one of the examples of what I mean earlier, that they re-imagine her classic outfit but without making it weird or unrelated to the source material.

I thought initially that Harley had taken Batman's utility belt, but it does belong to a police officer.. unless Batman as taken to wielding truncheons lately. Hmm... I wouldn't put it past him actually but he seems to enjoy using his fists too much. Harley's boots have fun little diamond patterns on them as well as her pom-poms. These pom-poms are usually only seen in her Christmas outfits or currently on her roller derby/hipster shoes - but I am never one to dislike pom-pom's so I'm fine with it.
My only real concern with the outfit is with the police belt. I personally own a pair of fuzzy pink

handcuffs and have yet to meet someone who doesn't... but I can't help but feel Harley has replaced her stolen handcuffs with coloured doughnuts.

Actually... now I think about it... why does a cop have fuzzy pink handcuffs?
Oh okay, they're Joker cuffs apparently. She also has a leaf from Poison Ivy and a scrap of Robin's cape so go figure.

Apart from the head, the body and pose are the same - she's running down a broken piece of the fun house, heedless of the dynamite in her path - ready to wallop her foe with her mallet. Or maybe win a prize at the carnival. Or just work out some aggression on the 'Bat in the Box.'

At first I was confused about the mallet as it looked warped, but the mallet actually has wood engravings of Harley's beloved pet hyenas, Bud and Lou, which is pretty cool.

Speaking of cool... the Exclusive edition (limited to 1000 pieces) comes with a 'Bat in the Box' figure. The Collector Edition (limited to 2000 pieces) doesn't, but it's about $15 cheaper. Also, you can pair this version with their Joker Premium Format for extra madhouse fun.

The box it comes in is kinda fun and retro looking - reminiscent of an old pack of playing cards.

With that said, I really like this statue. It reminds me of why I began collecting Harley Quinn - namely because all of her pieces were so original and unique compared to the majority of super hero and villain statues. I hardly have any room with which to store/display another Harley Quinn statue... but I might just make an exception here. If I do, I'll probably use the classic jester capped head. I like the other one, but the grumpy face just doesn't do it for me as I much prefer Harley's bubbly and gleeful personality.

All images in this post are from Sideshow's website and used only to review the statue. You can find the link to their website here. Below is the description they've presented about the Harley Quinn statue, however I have amended the spelling because... because I just had to. #sorrynotsorry
