Today I was reading some news and some Harley related things caught my eye, so here's my take on them. Please note some spelling corrections and punctuation have been added to original articles.
When DC Comics Makes The Case Against Harley Quinn
Posted by Rich Johnston November 21, 2017
Harley Quinn is one of DC Comics’ most successful breakout characters in recent years. long before the Suicide Squad calm, she was the cosplayer's choice, with a variety of looks down the decades and a certain propensity to survive and prosper despite have no superpowers save for the ability to do whatever the hell she wanted and get away with it.
She currently appears in the twice-monthly Suicide Squad comic, the twice-monthly Harley Quinn comic and plenty of other spin-off one-shots, mini-series and specials. Oh and in this month’s Red Hood And The Outlaws #16.
In which she encounters the Amazonian warrior Artemis – who seems to have a different take than the DC orthodoxy, And one shared by a number of critics…
Artemis also calls Harley prattling and tiresome. |
My thoughts on this is that I really hope so. I get that she sells, so naturally DC has her everywhere. There's probably some Harley Quinn in your own butt crack - that's how swamped we are with her. I don't really mind that she's everywhere but I hate the personality she has in the solo comic because she's very up herself. So when we get that, along with characters (talking about her Gang of Harleys or literally anyone in her solo series, Hack from Suicide Squad, anyone in the Suicide Squad movie, and even characters from Josie and Freakin' Pussycats) that are just there so they can gush over how *awesome* Harley is and how *unique* and how *hot* she is and so much *better* in her new self... is really, really, really getting old and annoying.
At the end of the day though... she is literally a maniac with a bat/mallet/whatever. As the White Knight comic states - a violent cheerleader. She is so over hyped but really - she poses no threat to someone like Artemis physically, and Artemis can see through her bullshit and mental games.
Originally she did have increased agility and speed, her immunity to toxins and some degree of healing factor but DC kinda ret-conned that (albeit not very clearly).

DC Entertainment's stand-alone digital service has just picked up its third series.
The Warner Bros. Digital Networks Group-owned platform has handed out a straight-to-series order for a Harley Quinn animated comedy.
The 26-episode half-hour project hails from Powerless trio Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey and is based on characters from the DC Comics universe. Harley Quinn was most recently played by Margot Robbie in the Warner Bros. feature Suicide Squad. Robbie will be asked to voice the DC platform animated series, though it's unclear if the in-demand actress will do it.
The project will also feature Poison Ivy and a cast of heroes and villains — old and new — from the DC universe. The animated series follows Harley as she breaks things off with the Joker and attempts to make it on her own as the criminal "queenpin" of Gotham City. The effort is described as an adult animated action-comedy. (Powerless, for its part, was DC Comics' first live-action half-hour comedy.)
Harley Quinn is the third series for DC's digital platform. It joins Greg Berlanti's live-action Titans series as well as the revival of former Cartoon Network animated series Young Justice. The SVOD service will launch in 2018.
I admit, I have not actually seen Powerless although it looked good. I also do like Danny Pudi, Vanessa Hudgens and Alan Tudyk. I liked the idea of a super hero insurance group and a DC universe that doesn't cross over into Supergirl/Flash/Green Arrow/Legends of Tomorrow etc. Maybe I will check out that series. Because if that's good - even if they do use the painfully tedious Harley Quinn solo comic as a basis for the story line, maybe it won't be as annoying as the comic itself.
Looks like NBC cancelled it though so, hmm. I really hope Maggot Robbie doesn't get the voice acting part! Stick to being the T&A and crapping all over my childhood, because your Harley voice is about as impressive as your Harley acting.

Six Flags has announced a huge lineup of new attractions debuting next year from coast to coast.
Many of the rides are first-of-their-kind, record-breaking attractions. With a list of themed rides based on names like Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, and Cyborg, tourists will be tempted to visit every Six Flags park next year to see them all.
WONDER WOMAN GOLDEN LASSO (Six Flags Fiesta Texas): The world’s first single rail coaster and first-ever WONDER WOMAN-themed roller coaster. With a 90-degree drop, this technological marvel features a first-of-its-kind single I-beam rail with riders seated single file. The unique, innovative design gives riders an open-air, unobstructed view as they fly along the track at 50 miles-per-hour. WONDER WOMAN Golden Lasso Coaster will thrill riders with two airtime hills, a 180-degree stall, turns and an awe-inspiring zero-g roll.
HARLEY QUINN SPINSANITY (Six Flags New England): The thrill capital of New England is taking thrills to a whole new level with HARLEY QUINN Spinsanity. This extreme pendulum ride whirls guests back and forth, higher and higher at up to 70 miles-per-hour for a dizzying ride experience as bizarre and unpredictable as HARLEY QUINN herself. Guests will be enthralled by a feeling of weightlessness at 147 feet in the air, before plunging downward from 15 stories.
HARLEY QUINN SPINSANITY (Six Flags Over Texas): The Texas park is also getting a version of Harley Quinn Spinsanity. Staying true to its namesake—this innovative attraction promises to deliver a new level of thrills with unpredictable, gravity-defying flips, twist and turns. Seated 24 across with over-the-shoulder harnesses, riders will experience a thrilling combination of negative and positive gravitational forces as they rotate forward, backwards and sideways up to 70 feet in the air.
HARLEY QUINN CRAZY COASTER (Six Flags Discovery Kingdom): The Thrill Capital of Northern California, will debut the thrilling, new HARLEY QUINN Crazy Coaster, the world’s first-of-its-kind inverted looping coaster featuring multiple inversions along a vertical, figure eight track. Riders will experience head-to-head flybys at combined speeds of 70 miles-per-hour as the two dueling trains race toward each other, culminating with a “High Five” moment giving the illusion that riders can actually reach out and “High Five” as they careen by.
This is along with other Harley Quinn rides, namely a "crazy train" at Six Flags Great Adventure
and the original spinsanity at Six Flags over Georgia, a dedicated Harley Quinn cart on the Gotham City Gauntlet: Escape from Arkham Asylum ride (also Six Flags New England) and a voice cameo on the Movie World (finally, an Australian entry) Arkham Asylum: Shock Therapy ride. There's a statue of her as well (which doesn't count because it's the new Harley Quinn) and she was a feature in the 75th DC events (and I stalked her character mercilessly.... MERCILESSLY.)
So, considering Wonder Woman is only just NOW getting her own roller coaster, Miss Quinn seems to be doing quite well for herself. It's funny because over here in Australia when we talk about Harley making mad money for DC - you think about comics, movies, animated series, games, statues etc.. but you never really think about what an attractions she apparently is for the theme parks over there considering she's only really had a minor impact in ours.
